The Niagara Falls State Park offers a different kind of family friendly water adventure located just a couple of blocks away from the park. Known as Niagara’s other “wet wonder”, the Aquarium of Niagara is included in the value-added Niagara Falls USA Discovery Pass package. Originally a privately owned research facility, the Niagara Aquarium Foundation opened it to tourists in 1994. The goal was to create awareness and broaden the public’s knowledge of aquatic ecosystems and promote conservation. The aquarium offers educational and recreational programs, stimulating displays and exhibits as well as exclusive experiences that let visitors get up close and personal with marine life.
The aquarium houses over 1,500 aquatic animals from a variety of ecosystems from the coral reefs to the Great Lakes. There are sea horses, fresh and saltwater fish, Peruvian penguins, harbor seals and performing California sea lions. The Aquarium of Niagara features marine mammal shows and around 40 exhibits including a seahorse exhibit, a sturgeon exhibit, a tidal pool exhibit and many other attractions all throughout the year.
As part of its educational program the Aquarium of Niagara is open for school groups and field trips for a reduced ticket price. Students can get in “touch” with marine life through Touch Tank Lessons, a touch tank filled is with a variety of sea creatures including lobsters, crabs and sea stars and after a marine lesson, students are encouraged to touch and interact with the animals. Touch Tank Lessons are available for student groups and with reservation only.
For those who wish to get more up close and personal with marine life, the aquarium offers several; Exclusive Experiences. The Meet a Seal experience allows visitors to catch a glimpse of the marine mammals care and training. For 20 minutes visitors can feed, play and interact with the Aquarium’s trained seals. The Humboldt Penguin Interactive Program is another fun and educational close encounter with one of the aquarium’s most beloved animals. The 20-minute experience lets visitors learn more about the Humboldt Penguins and how truly remarkable they are. Toddlers are also welcome to experience the wonders of marine life through crafts, story time and hands on experience every third Tuesday of every month.
